I realize I left a lot of "Long's" off the list, including da kingfish. But as I have said, I am generally limiting the list to post 1965 names.  Feel free to use the OTHER option if you want to go back in time.

Louisiana is quite the "colorful" state -- lotta characters here.

Russell "don't tax you, don't tax me, tax the man behind the tree" Long gets the gold going away on this one.

Marc Morial.  As a frequent visitor to NOLA, the city did well under his administration.

I gave him some consideration, but I realized some of my fondness for him was due to the fact that I also love Walter Mathau...who played Long in Stone's JFK.  I don't buy the history of the movie, but I loved Mathau's delivery of Long.  Referring to the President as "that ol' polecat Lyndon" was just so perfect.

My vote goes to Hale Boggs, for a few reaons.  First, he was accused of being a Communist sympathizer.  I am immediately attracted to people who endured that sort of label...particularly when it had no substance to it.  I like that he seemed to reform, too.  Early on, he was tragically a supporter of Segregation.  But in his later Senate career, he really seemed to come around.  And third, he spawned the delightful Cokie Boggs-Roberts...who delivers the most wonderful analysis for NPR.

But my, my -- what a bowl of mixed nuts we find here.  Ray Nagin, David Duke, Bill Jefferson...

Though I favor abortion rights, Breaux always held my respect for his anti-choice position.  I have a soft spot for pro-life Democrats and pro-choice Republicans...if only because I realize how taking such a stand marginalizes a person.  Breaux was a good egg and I hope he is not done with politics.

Moon Landrieu, as the best of a bad, bad lot.

I just want to add that Landrieu was under consideration for being McGovern's running mate in 1972.  But the convention was being held in Miami Beach that year, and nobody wanted "Moon Over Miami" to be on the newspaper headlines.
