I'm going to say fair, though it is unfair people have gotten weaker sentences for murder, but that says more about those sentences than it does about this possible one.

Am I the only one who would savagely beat and torture someone who did that to my pet? I might even take it further than that, but I don't want to sound too crazy.

He should be burned in an oven... by a kitten. If no kitten steps forward to execute the sentence, let him go.

That's what I'm thinking.

It's a freaking cat people.  10 years for killing a cat?  Our judicial system is all kinds of funked up.

Word. Did you hear about the lady who left 10 newly born puppies to die in a trash can? Yeah, she got one year in prison. They're considering giving a teenager 10 years for burning one cat to death? That's funked up man.

Shouldn't this mean life in prison for Bill Frist?

I have very little sympathy for dumb motherfuckers that torture animals, but seeing as how this is a teen, 10 years is a bit excessive. I'm not against jail time, but I'm not for making an example of him.

The fact that people are referring to the perpetrator using masculine pronouns show that no one bothered to read the article apparentely.

100 dogs' lives  = 1 cat's life?

Sounds pretty reasonable, actually.

Guilty as charged. Of course I was just replying to the comments above, rather than the article itself.

Fair, especially since sadistic violence against animals is often a precursor to sadistic violence against humans.

Totally fair.  And on a side note, the 10 years isn't just for burning the kitten, it's for burning the kitten (animal cruelty and arson) and burglary.

Personally, I'd say 10 years just for killing the kitten + another 10 years for breaking into the roommate's apartment.

The teen destroyed a bunch of stuff in the apartment - the 10 years isn't just for the cat.

As is being sexually abused as a child, should we lock them up just to be safe?  Or kids that draw bloody pictures or write violent stories?  I'm not saying the kid shouldn't be punished for his actions (and the fact that the 10 years isn't just for burning a cat like the OP suggested changes my level of outrage as well), I'm just saying killing a cat doesn't make somebody a likely Hannibal Lector.

(and no, I've never killed a mammal in a violent/cruel fashion...a few bugs, sure...but none of the "higher" animals)

Fair, considering she was charged with multiple counts of burglary, arson and criminal mischief, in addition to cruelty to animals.

That's gotta be some of the worst reasoning I've seen on these boards.  Torturing and killing animals is a common practice among the sadistic and sociopathic.  (I remember there was one former politician who spent his childhood blowing up frogs with firecrackers - he turned out to be quite a monster when in office)

And if anyone is getting less than 10 years for murder without major mitigating circumstances, they are getting off far too easily.

She's also 17, so it's not like we're talking about a young kid here.

If that is not inconsistent for punishment for that sort of crime, I do not see why not.

No, but those don't hurt anything. Certainly animals shouldn't have rights equal to that of humans, but they do have rights, and brutally killing one for no reason is cruel and shows mental instability. Drawing bloody pictures is a fantasy, not an act.
