As in most important? Hard to say... very hard to say. It's probably easier to do for the century as a whole; a shortlist of Stalin (much more influential than Hitler in so many ways...) Gandhi and Keynes seems about right. Still not sure about the order though.

far too much focus on politicians, i think

Yeah, that's true.  But politicians are pretty important.  I should develop a list of non-politician people of the decade.

Einstein's theory of special relativity came out in 1905, but his theory of general relativity came out in 1915.  I can't really judge which was more important, though.

It is impossible to say that one is really more important than the other. Both were groundbreaking developments of tremendous significance.

However, in 1905 (the "Annus Mirabilis," Latin for "Year of Wonders"), Einstein did more than just publish his theory of special relativity. He also wrote important papers on light quanta and the photoelectric effect, on atoms and Brownian motion, and on the mass-energy equivalence. It was in 1905 that he published the most famous equation in all of science, E=mc^2. That's why I chose him for the 1900s, rather than the 1910s.
