The 2008 Minnesota Senate race featured three men who either had, were or would eventually serve in the U.S. Senate - Dean Barkley, Norm Coleman and Al Franken, respectively.

Has this ever before occurred? A general election between three former/current/future Senators?

I should note that I have no idea... just wondering if anyone else did.

It may have happened in the South at some point, but perhaps that's only been in the primaries.

Look no further than Minnesota in 1996. Paul Wellstone was re-elected over former Senator Rudy Boschwitz and future two-month Senator Dean Barkley.

Ah, you're right. Not as cool as I had thought then.

I think it's even cooler to have happened only twice (as far as we know) and in the same state, for the same seat with one of the same candidates just a few years apart.

Here's another interesting bit of trivia:

In Norm Coleman's three statewide elections, he's defeated a former Vice President and lost to a wrestler and a comedian.

Minnesota is a ridiculous state.

I wish I could join in on the Minnesota bashing, but our governor is a total joke.
