Question: Is it legitimate to argue that Rick Santorum could be the 2012 nominee?

Yes, he's a solid conservative who caught a bad break in '06 and can win the base and the country.

No. He's done.

I'm sorry. The Libertarian candidate captured 2% of the vote. Would that have gone to Wofford? Ha. Then there's the "Patriot" candidate also received 2% of the vote. I think you know the platform of that candidate...

So your two point race likely becomes a six point race.

Maybe. But I don't think there was every a chance of it being especially close;almost regardless of the Democrat, the margin would have likely been bigger than any Santorum himself won by.

Tough year, my friend, but I doubt someone like Hafer or Hoeffel would have won by more than six.

Phil you know that I am a Catholic, you're my bud on the Atlas and I respect you.  Nonetheless I do not forsee any way that Santorum can make a big political comeback.  Its like me saying that Tom Dashcle, Max Cleland, Terry Sanford or Jim Sasser are going to make a triumphant comeback sometime soon.

For all we know, one of those candidates (mainly Daschle or Cleland) can make a comeback. The major difference in Santorum's favor is that he is still embraced by the base and still involved.

If things get bad enough nationally for the Dems, he stands a good chance at being someone my party will rally around.

Again, folks, things change.

BRTD could become Pope.

Good argument!

What are the chances of BRTD of all people even converting to Catholicism?

So... I'll step into the fray on this one...

Rick has a lot of options, but decidedly more non-elected than elected options.

He could easily pick up a show on Fox, kinda like Huckabee did, a Sunday evening sorts of feel good show. I fully expect him to be an election night staple on Fox this year, especially if Pennsylvania and some of the Great Lakes states look close. He could write books, or go on a speaking circuit (we have GEORGE ALLEN coming this month to UT, who wouldn't have Santorum over rather than Allen?)

Electorally, if Casey decides to go away, Santorum can try for the seat, not to mention Specter is very old and always in ill health. His chances for the Senate or even House all depends on the mid-term backlash against the Democrats in '10. If Pelosi and Reid stay in power and continue to be useless, we could see a swing back to conservatives, especially if Obama fails to seize the initiative.

My wife thought I was being sarcastic when I told her in 2000 that the Democrats would be bitching about that election for the next 10 years.

How long ago was the Civil War?

I don't think that 100% of the minor party votes would have gone to Santorum, though obviously he'd have taken most of them. Not that it matters. I repeat that he'd have lost in any other year.

Hafer and Hoeffel being pretty much the only plausible challengers who'd be as bad as Santorum.

About the same as Santorum managing to successfully resurrect his political career.

Right...like in 2000.

Cue to...

"OMG HELLOOOOO WEAK OPPONENT!"

So who else would have run? You do know that Hafer and Hoeffel were the frontrunners, right?

Ha, ok. Get back to me when you know how to make a point and not resort to circular arguing (the technique you've used to trick people here into thinking you're brilliant).

Giving the man practically no chance at ever coming back without ever really knowing the political factors of the future is ridiculous.

And incumbency. Of course all of that (and 1994) was before he became addicted to playing with fire, rather than merely using it on an as-and-when basis.

Yes. Or at least they thought that they were.

I thought that I made my point quite well enough, thankee. A cheap point it might have been, but a point it was.

The use of "you" here confuses me.

The poll results say it all really.

OK Phil, how about this: How would you react to a Minnesota conservative arguing Rod Grams would one day make a political comeback?

I voted "Hi, Phil!" Wink That much said, he could run for representative in some microcosm of Utah, though I'm not sure how he'd feel about the demotion.

Rod Grams wasn't a stand out, has no political ambitions and isn't connected on the national scene.

Next bad comparison, please.

Yes. Or at least they thought that they were.

So how can you say that Santorum would have lost to any other Dem?

He's done.  Yes he excites the base, but thats it.  He has no appeal whatsoever to moderates and Independents.

I don't really want to psychoanalyze you, as appealing at that sounds.  but you just show far too many of the signs.  you want to be respected.  you want to be a USElectionAtlas Moderate Hero just like Gabu, Joe Republic, and some other blowhards.

This is the earliest recorded reference to Ben as a Moderate Hero.

Just for historical record.

not to brag, but I also invented fantasy politics and was the first to refer to BRTD as 'BRTD'.  among other things, of course.

That quote alone puts you in an excellent position to name other posters as "blowhards".  Smiley
