After serving in the U.S. Air Force as a cop from 1973-1977, he joined the Police force in our hometown just south of Cleveland as a dispatcher from 1977 until December 31, 1979 when he became an active patrolman.

He retires today. He'll still have police credentials and we'll go buy a little gun but his days as an active Police Officer are over and retirement is his at 53 years of age. He's happy to be going.

I'm about to take a physical for the Air Force (or Army) within the next few weeks, and I will be heading into the Military. However, I may not seek Police work as a guaranteed job in the Military.

Congrats.

He looks pretty badass in that pic, almost like Don Johson.

Congratulations to your dad.

Do police officers usually retire in their 50s? Seems a bit young.

Typically, you're allowed to retire within 20 years. At least for the more high risk work. So it's really not uncommon.

Tell your dad congratulations.  And tell him that I personally thank him for his service.  I love police officers.  You're dad is a true American hero.

Good for him.  Glad to hear he served such a long time.  He deserves retirement.

All law-abiding citizens of the area agree.

Probably breathing a sigh of relief as well. Tongue

He's gonna be able to still hold Police credentials and a weapon, as long as he tests it out on the range first, which he'll do.

I asked him if he choked up at all saying goodbye to people, and he said he felt no emotion, which proves his theory that after 31 years at that station, he truly was tired of it.

God I am a spittin' image of him.
