So, according to this:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules.asp

I am now a Canadian citizen, even though I was born in the US, never lived in Canada in my life, and never applied for citizenship.  At least, that's how I read it.  It says:

All of those apply to me.  I was born well after 1947, and my mother is a Canadian citizen (though she hasn't lived there in decades, not since well before I was born).  So I guess I'm Canadian now.

Congratulations! Canadian citizenship is much more useful than American citizenship, I'd think.

I have no immediate plans to acquire a Canadian passport.  My Australian visa lists my citizenship as US only, and trying to mess around with that now would probably just make life more complicated.  I wouldn't want to attract any unwanted attention from Australian immigration.  Smiley

After I leave Australia though, maybe.  I would need a compelling reason to do it though.

I have Irish citizenship and I've never been there and my parents weren't born there, so there.

How did you get it?

Grandfather was born there and I got a priest, banker, or school principle to vouch for my character.

The way I read it I'm also a Canadian citizen. While I do not fulfill all 3 requirements, I were born outside Canada after January 1 1947. Cheesy

It's a reasonably standard white commonwealth law. I think Britain, NZ and Australia have the same system with slight changes.

Now register to vote in a swing seat, and vote Liberal in the upcoming election.

Though until then, bow down to our local village dictator, Herr Harper.
