the military tends to vote GOP, but not monolithically so. The military, from what I've heard, tends to be more politically apathetic than society as a whole. Obama probably ran a few points behind in the black military vote relative to his performance in the overall black vote.

Military blacks were probably 2 to 3 points more GOP than non-military  blacks...

It's only officers and whatnot who are uber-Republican.

Grunts are def Republican-leaning too, though.

Not black grunts, though.

Fort Lewis has a decent AA population from what I remember... what is the percentage and is there any correlation between more heavily black base precincts and less black base precincts in multiple military communities? Stats from Fort Hood, Fort Benning, etc would be interesting.

Fort Lewis actually may have voted for Obama this year.

How black is Fort Benning?  Unfortunately I don't know of any military precinct that's majority black.  Fort Hood is almost 40%, though.

Military personnel do not vote at the base where they're stationed, so it's moot really.

Oftentimes not true...plenty do.  Not most, but unless it's not a representative sample?

This is dated and remembered info and may not entirely be accurate, but:

The officer class is Democratic-Black style Republican. It's also more white than the Nation.
Ordinary soldiers are similar to the nation at large... but this doesn't hold anymore once you sample for race (as they're less white).

Given that Obama seems to have won over a large part of the previous Black Republican vote remnant, and it seems likely that Black soldiers used to be more Republican than Blacks at large (not necessarily though - the difference may have been lying with Whites and perhaps Hispanics. No way to tell really) some of the big swings in the military vote might be related to the fact that Black Republicans would have been way overrepresented in army ranks (Blacks overrepresented, and Republicans likely overrepresented among these Blacks).
