This would be the sign that congressional Republicans are jettisoning the national ticket and trying to save themselves.

This has been on the way for about a week. Those calls are not helping McCain in ME, but are hurting Republicans down to the state rep and state senate level.

Kos brought up a decent point about this comment: in what states does Susan Collins feel these robocalls are acceptable?

Coleman also did this but in more vague terms.

How is that a decent point, exactly?

she said "these kind of tactics have no place in Maine politics."  the implication would seem to be that she feels it is ok in other states.

Or that she takes a certain pride in her state's politics.

That's a ridiculous assumption.  Is that the best fake outrage we can conjure?

I'm hardly outraged, although some of the Kos people seemed to be.  I don't really care, but I just find the wording to be a bit interesting.

She's a Senator from Maine, and the calls are being placed in Maine to Maine voters specifically because John McCain was hoping to win the state of Maine.

Perhaps an interpretation could be that "negative campaigning may work in other states, but Maine voters find it distasteful.  I'd like to call upon the McCain campaign to stop bothering my constituents with these robo-calls."

In any case, you're over analyzing this stuff.  No one puts that much thought into a comment such that every single word and phrase has hidden meaning.

It's exceedingly obvious that Maine was mentioned here
a) to have mentioned Maine. Can't have a sentence without a verb, a noun, and Maine in it in races like this one. The point is to remind people in Maine that she represents Maine and wants to continue to do so.
b) to signal that she doesn't actually throw McCain under the bus, she'd just like him to butt out of her affairs. A statement like this:
I decry robocalls no matter who makes them.
could have been seen as throwing McCain under the bus. It would also imply some moral conviction (which I admit is cheaper on an internet forum than in the Senate.)

Ie, Spinning and Cowardice. Bad.
