Most of what I'm reading on this is from the Texas Democratic blogs and an email I just recieved, but it seems pretty serious regardless. Because I haven't found a news article about this, I'll have to link to Burnt Orange Report, a blog about Democratic politics in Texas:

Pete Olsen is of course the Republican challenging Nick Lampson in TX-22 after winning a pretty contested Republican primary.

Voters don't care about this type of thing, I can't imagine it will affect his vote percentage.

But I still think Lampson could squeek out a win here.

We'll see.  What's much more interesting is how much the Lampson stronghold in Galveston County and the Republican stronghold in Clear Lake, Seabrook etc. recovers after the Ike stuff.  Both areas were hit quite hard.

Since when is a politician running for office committing a felony not a big story? I mean, he's a Republican, so it's a little less surprising, but it's still pretty significant I would think.

As Scoonie noted, voters don't care about this type of thing. Sorry. They've tried this on others. It just doesn't stick.

There is zero here, because it appears that he stopped voting in Conn and started voting in Virginia. Nobody "cancels" their registration. What they really needed to make it sexy was voting in both states at the same time.

Rice political science professor  Bob Stein argues that Lampson has a better than 50/50 chance of winning. He posits that the DCCC's August ads attacking Olson's support of the "fair tax" have resonated with swing voters. He says that Olson's campaign staff has run a gutless, complacent campaign based on the premise that his party ID will carry him to victory. In the wake of Hurricane Ike, voters may be predisposed to maintain the current representative, especially since  he has the seniority to help them gain funding for critical infrastructure repairs.

In short, it isn't over yet for Lampson.

Stein's political analysis has always had a slight Democratic slant, but I agree with him to a certain extent.  The question to me is whether Ike affects the voting of the two hard hit areas.  Let's face it, Olson needs the Clear Lake area and Lampson certainly needs Galveston County.

Let me see if I got this straight:  if I live in Connecticut and vote in a May municipal election, and then move to Virginia and register to vote, I'm committing a crime if I vote in the November general election?  Umm... No.

I moved.  I registered to vote in Virginia.  I told Virginia I last voted in Connecticut.  Virginia didn't tell Connecticut I'm now on their voter rolls.  And I didn't vote in the same election in Connecticut.

The part of this story that Lampson should exploit the most is the fact that five years ago Olsen wasn't even living in the state.

Graduated from Clear Lake High School,  Rice University, and University of Texas Law School.  On the day he passed the bar exam he reports for active duty naval service (aviation).  After his naval service he joins the staff of Phil Gramm and then is chief of staff for John Cornyn.

Compare to Nick Lampson.   I used to visit my grandparents near Stafford and worked in the fields.   I had a rough childhood.  I was county appraiser in Jefferson County (Beaumont) for close to 2 decades and then I was elected to Congress.  I was later defeated by Ted Poe.  I then moved out of my district and ran for Congress and managed to be elected by some skullduggery.  Please vote for me so I can support the agenda of Nancy Pelosi.
