Kathleen:  ... Who's the candidate with the right economic policies? We know what you're political leanings are, but as an economist, what do you see Larry?

Summers: Oh, as I look at the issues, I- I think Senator Obama is much closer to the mark.  I think he's proposed the kind of further fiscal stimulus we need to create jobs and get the economy going.  I think he's prepared in a much more aggressive way to think about reform of the financial system to avoid these kinds of problems in the future.  I think he's got a serious vision on how to proceed on healthcare that potentially will take very large burdens off a very large number of businesses.  I think that compromise on energy is probably right, but Senator Obama is really hugely focused on the major technological changes that we need.  So I would be more comfortable with the path that he would set. But you know, some people will disagree with me obviously.  But I would just hope that the voters pay close attention, because I think the economic issues are as large now as they have been at any time in my memory.

And this is a big deal how...?

Unless this loses him a couple ardent feminist votes here in Cambridge, impact is zero, surprise is zero....
