Let's say that McCain wins and appoints Lieberman Secretary of Homeland Security, leaving a vacancy in the Senate. Jodi Rell decides to appoint herself to the Senate, and gets the Republican nomination for the special election. Ned Lamont (who seems to be popular as of late) gets the Democratic nomination.

How would this turn out? I think Rell would win by about 5 points.

LOL

Right now, in 2008, it's "Ned who?" You think he'd really be a serious candidate in 2010? He wouldn't be nominated but if he was, Rell wins.

Why would Connecticut Democrats commit suicide like this?

Rell wins in a slaughter, at least 60-40.

An overdose of polls, perhaps?

Do you think Lieberman would be confirmed?

No real reason not to. After all, Reagan and Ford and Nixon got their nominees confirmed. While there'd be quite a bit of malice, it'd be about 70-30.

Think Shays vs. Lamont. After 2008, Shays may be looking for employment. The double coincidence of wants (Lieberman longs for the DoD post and Shays hopes for a fancier title) could be fulfilled if McCain wins.

I doubt Rell is audacious enough to appoint herself to the Senate. She doesn't seem like a particularly ambitious pol (IIRC, she almost decided against a reelection in 2006).

I think everyone except the poster just before me is seriously underestimating the backlash against Rell for appointing herself to the Senate. That would not go over well.

Before this can be answered though we'd need to know the national climate. If it's the current climate, I'd put it as a toss-up.

Do people really care if a Governor appoints him or herself to a Senate seat?

Well he did that, and he lost re-election in '78, as did the Governor that replaced him.

It doesn't happen terribly often (probably because Governors aren't stupid enough to do it), I'll try to find another example.

But really, just imagine the visual. Someone coming out to announce that they've concluded the best replacement to the Senate is... themselves! And they're taking the cushy job and getting the hell out of dodge! I think it'd be worse than the flap after Murkowski appointed his daughter (and now before you point out that she won re-election, it was narrow, and Alaska is no Connecticut).

Frank Murkovski lost in the Republican primary after he appointed his daughter senator.

I actually think appointing your daughter would be worse, where nepotism replaces self-confidence.

hard to say, depends on how badly appointing herself to the Senate seat is received,  The Dems do have much better choices than Lamont though.

I just don't think people care.
