On the heels of his record breaking 0.78% showing in the North Carolina primary last week, Mike Gravel scored an astounding 4% of the vote in Nebraska tonight.

So my question is: WTF?

For saying that people are more likely to vote for a candidate as a statement in a meaningless election? Seems like common sense to me.

IIRC, Nebraska isn't awarded any delegates from this primary. What's more, it could be a protest vote from people tired of the protracted battle for the nomination. It seems likely, given that Gravel certainly isn't actively campaigning beyond LP state conventions.

Although the Gravelanche is indeed "impressive" I think the more interesting thing that comes out of this is the Obama-Clinton numbers.  Obama beat Clinton by 2% according to the Nebraska SOS website.  Although a much less impressive win than his runaway caucus victory, a win is a win as so many Clinton people keep saying.

What's even more important to note is that it blows the whole "blue collar whites argument" out of the water.  Obama is not doomed to lose this cohort in the general.  He will have enough of their support to win.

Um... why [question mark]. What on earth has Nebraska, of all places, got to do with the voting patterns of working class whites [question mark]. There probably aren't many states with less of them as a percentage (especially in cultural terms, and as E.P.Thompson showed...)

Well if define "working class whites" as "whites without a college degree", then 26.9% of Nebraskans have a college degree, compared to 27% nationwide. So statistically insignificant yes, but when you consider that those Nebraska figures include only whites for the most part (because what else is there in Nebraska?) while the nationwide figures are skewed by minorities, you can conclude that whites in Nebraska are more "working class" by this definition than white nationwide.

That's the definition the media usually cites.

Here's the basic point though: Is Nebraska a land of latte liberals?

No, of course not. But I don't think that is the basic point though.

The point is the crap from Hillary hacks/Republicans (same thing though basically) that the only voters Obama wins are blacks and elitist wealthy latte liberals.

Hey, take a look at Thurston County, Nebraska which Obama won. This clearly looks like a place full of wealthy liberal elitists.

Gravel even took 20% in McPherson County (or, 4 votes out of 20).
