More importantly, he's not an elected official lying about his positions to get (re-)elected.

While he has been better in recent years, I still don't appreciate the idea that he fudged facts to fool the American people into supporting an unnecessary war of aggression in Iraq. None-the-less, he is a well respected figure around the country and I would hope that his endorsement is welcome.

Considering Lieberman got reelected as an indy, I'd say he's liked.

Good for him.  Party status should in no way restrict who you support for President.

This is a man with integrity.  He feels that the speech at the UN was a stain on his record and he regrets that he believed the information and probably feels used also.

He opposed Tommy Franks/Dick Cheney/Rumsfeld plans arguing we were not committing enough troops.

He was one of the few Bush appointees "dumped" but he wasn't a Yes man.

This man could wind up back in appointed Govt Service for either McCain or Obama.  How many other people could we say that about?

Considering that Powell has formed a "defeatist" opinion on Iraq , I would say it's unlikely that warmonger McCain would consider him for a position.

Obama/Powell '08!

Not really, but an endorsement from Powell would be cool.

Much as i respect and like Powell, if i was the Obama campaign i might worry that a Powell endorsment could look too much like "racial politics"... still on balance think it could be a net plus but the racial angle could distort it somewhat.

What did the article say?  The link seems to have expired - was he considering just becoming a Democrat in general, or endorsing Obama?  I could definitely Powell in some kind of official capacity in 2009 - even if the Democrats win; perhaps on something like the President's Foreign Policy Intelligence Advisory Board?

I would like to point out that according to a study Colin Powell has the dubious distinction of having made the most lies about Iraq running up to the war.

I think Powell is saying that he would support the candidate, not the party.
