I disagree. While our campuses are overwhelmingly liberal places, the liberal establishment holds athletics in terrible disdain - a blight upon the major universities. I knew lots of liberals at Madison who referred to the football players as "serial rapists" and so forth. The people who support the athletics programs are wealthy alums, who are generally conservative.
