Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R), an eight-termer from Maryland, from a stiff challenge from two more conservative rivals who accuse him of several apostasies. Gilchrest, who is moderate Republican with a strongly pro-environment and anti-war record, may benefit from having two challengers, both of whom are well-funded, serious candidates, split the opposition vote.
I'm grateful that former Speaker Newt Gingrich would raise funds and vouch for Congressman Gilchrest. Moderate Republicans like Gilchrest were an essential stopgap back in the 1990's to the more radical components of the Contract with America. Were it not for the bravery of Congressman Gilchrest and a band of other centrist, environmentally conscious Republicans, the EPA would've been gutted at the behest of former exterminator Tom DeLay. Fortunately, Newt Gingrich is still standing up for his former colleague.
