But didn't you see my post? Doesn't fit your stereotype does it?

are you aware of the straightedge movement?

hey, which one of us was the one advocating reckless promiscous sex in that thread awhile back?

Yes, I am aware of the "straight edge" movement...very, very weird.

If we want to use stereotypes Mark, you must be a Bible thumper who hates strip clubs and alcohol and gambling and obscenity on TV.

Ask yourself, where do stereotypes come from? Why do they persist if there's no truth to them?

So people who where glasses ARE actually a bit smarter because that's the stereotype?

They exist when you take a small minority of the population and exaggerate it in your speech into a huge majority.  It's really that simple.

Lunar, OK, unlike these other guys, I can actually discuss this with you on an intelligent level. Ask yourself what are the origins of stereotypes? They involve all racial and ethnic groups...they have to come from somewhere, there has to be a rational basis for them at some point, right? It's not like one really, really WHITE GUY in WISCONSIN is sitting in his living room and saying, "OK, Asian people are this, and Italian people are that, etc, etc..."

You're telling me that Hitler had a rational basis for killing Jews?

Yes, as a Conservative Republican it would have made perfect sense for you to believe that of me until you saw proof to the contrary!!! There's nothing wrong with that, that's LIFE.

(where=wear).

Anyway, sure.  Racial stereotypes tend to have origins in a segment of a population that expand to expectation.

For killing Jews? Of course not.

but Mark, you missed this:

stupid stereotype Mark. I work with a girl who I find somewhat attractive but absolutely nuts. She has all sorts of bumper stickers over her cubicle saying things like "SATAN WANTS TO VOTE PRO-CHOICE" and "ABORTION IS THE AMERICAN HOLOCAUST". But guess what? She has a lip ring.

Meanwhile while reading a band I like's liner notes I found a lot of talking about opposition to war, racism, sexism and homophobia yet they also talked about their opposition to the use of drugs and the alcohol industry, and the problems with promiscous sex.

I dont think any of these ideas spewed out be any of you all are going to work very well.  As usual, everyone has a point.  For instance, 18-29 year olds probably are going to vote for Kerry more than Bush, and there is a higher likelyhood that they may use drugs.  That said, its hardly accurate to assume 3%, or even 30% of a population represents 80% of it.

Anyway, my basic point is, that the most recent poster was basically on target with his remarks.

But dont we always over generalize in politics.  This ridiculous division between red and blue states is fun for punditry and gaming, but what good is it?    Even in Utah, over 1 out of 4 people voted democrat in 2000.  Shouldnt it just be a redder purple?

I think it is more prudent to analyize trends, rather than pure numbers

No, I did not miss it, I ignored it. I think it should be all too obvious that "generalizations" can still have validity without applying to EVERYONE within a given subset. This should be obvious to anyone capable of critical thought...

I was correcting a spelling mistake I made in the post you quoted where I said "So people who where glasses ARE actually a bit smarter because that's the stereotype?"

I thought it was the post after yours, but it wasn't.

Many stereotypes are based out of fear or trying to objectify a group of people.  In this sense stereotypes are used to give the person or group that uses the stereotypes over the group or in an effort to understand or explain away the groups ideas or actions.

Stereotypes are also often used of laziness, though this can be the vile excuse of hate.  There are a lot of people in the world and I will never be able to know everyone.  By using stereotpes you can box down the scope of the universe.  Make the world more understandable by breaking it down to more basic blocks.

Stereotypes, though a time saving tool, should never be used, stereotyping is the innocent excuse for rascism, homophobia, sexism and xenophobia.

People that excuse away their prejudices are deluding themselves.  Don't stereotype. Pull off the blinders.
