No big surprise, but Albert Pollard returned to the Virginia Assembly with a 57% win in a special election to succeed new Rep. Rob WIttman. Democrats now have 45 seats in the House of Delegates.

Thelma Drake's former legislative seat went Democratic in the subsequent special election, and if Tim Hugo runs and wins in the 11th district, it could be 3 for 3. It would be ironic if the Republican gerrymander in Virginia's congressional districts ultimately costs them control of the Assembly by creating too many opportunities to move up!

The irony police would like to speak with you for egregious abuse of the term.

I don't expect Tim Hugo or any other GOPer to win or to even come all that close to winning VA-11 so I wouldn't count on a GOP vacancy as a result.  Keep in mind that Virginia's off-year state legislative elections allow legislators to run for higher office without risk.

I hold out hope that Democrats can eventually be competitive in VA-02.  It looks like Thelma Drake will probably win again this year by a decent margin.  But as Virginia Beach continues to trend bluer and as some of the recently elected Dems in the area (newly elected State Sen. Ralph Northam and the new Virginia Beach legislators) mature, I imagine we will be able to knock her off.

Meanwhile, I'm still hoping that Rep. Frank Wolf (VA-10) retires, opening up a competitive race and that Rep. Virgil Goode (VA-05) gets indicted for something or other.

That's better than the Alanis Morrisette song uses it.

Seriously, I'm a big supporter of pedantry and welcome being corrected, but isn't it an accurate case of irony where a powerful group sets out to increase its power, and in doing so, sows the seeds of its own collapse?

Hubris is a more accurate term, but it doesn't capture the sense of inversion.
