Recently, my high school implemented a new dance policy that banned dancing such as "Grinding, Bumping, and freak dancing." We had a dance that was scheduled to happen today, however, there was only 18 tickets sold out of a school of 960. The administration then canceled the dance. I am wondering what forumers think of this issue. Thoughts?

You're high schools dance policy is about a decade out of date.

The fact that they felt the need to use "yoof" terms like "grinding" and "bumping" shows just how out of touch they are, because it is actually quite patronising. It's like saying "We think you're too stupid to understand language like 'close physical contact', so we'll use some of your language so you know what we're on about - and we'll look hip and down wid da kidz to boot!". Well, something like that.

In any case, I suspect the school would prefer their dance to have looked a little like this...

What a retarded policy.

At my high school dances, people would do that stuff and the adults would just roll their eyes and sigh.  Then a cool song would come on like the Electric Slide and everyone would do it along with the adults and then it was all forgotten about.

Don't your school administrators realize that dancing is pretty much vertical sex.. no matter the style?  They're probably full of English Puritan heritage where they'd cut off their own penis if it weren't for the serious urinary problems that would ensue.

Grinding is pretty much standard at my high school dances.  They don't even play slow songs anymore.  However, the sad part is, at this year's homecoming, grinding continued through songs like the Electric Slide and the Cha Cha Slide.

Yep. I recall when we couldn't even embrace in a slow dance.

If a girl doesn't want to be grinded on - then only go out during certain songs, stay to the outer calmer fringes of the floor or don't go to the dance.  The school has no right to limit this as long as the students rights of privacy and not being inappropriately touched (to a point of sexual assault of the I'm thinking it's 3rd, but it might be 2nd degree).

Don't worry about it, I had this happen at my school last year. The school will make a bit deal out of it for the first year and then when you get to school the next year they magically stop enforcing the things that they were so offended by the year prior. They claim victory after nothing has changed.

At my school they also cancelled ALL the dances for the rest of the year after the freshman dance (for those who don't know the freshman dance is where the upper classmen basically freak dance on the freshman, its kind of a welcome event...) with the exception of Prom. So basically there were two dances total. Then in the middle of the year they tried to have a dance with the lights on and dance rules enforced. Number of tickets sold out of 1500 students: 4.  After that episode they basically gave in  Smiley , though upper classmen are no longer allowed to atend the freshman dance.    Sad

My High school had a similar sounding policy to this but it was never really enforced.  Usually the only people that got in trouble were the ones inappropriately grabbing or groping each other.

Wow, I guess this is just my area. I have a rather progressive school (although it is in the suburbs), and we have policies against freak dancing, grinding, etc. I guess they aren't really enforced, but I'm surprised that it isn't an issue at my high school.

And you think this school's policy was bad - my (private) school thought dancing was a "sin" - a bunch of b.s. - there's dancing in the Bible.  Not that I was sad - I can't dance at all and will probably refuse to at my wedding as well (harsh, but if you've seen me dance, you'd know why).

Well, this is why you don't go to high school dances.

My school would've kicked somebody out if they found out they had sex.

We had pretty much that exact same policy, and no one complained.

Of course the school shouldn't be holding school dances.  Endorsing sin is a sin.  Bunch of hedonists.

And terms like "grinding" really piss me off.

When are we going to have a return to real dances?  If dances become more dignified, society will follow.

Obviously we should elect Ron Paul so he can abolish school.

Seriously though, highschool was all grinding at the dances, the teachers never cared, and this was smack in the middle of the megachurch DFW metro.

The idea of high school kids grinding on each other at a dance just goes to show how old I am....well that and having gone to a small rural school. But back in my day (I graduated 10 years ago this year) this certainly wouldn't have been allowed, and I can't recall anyone trying it. People did get quite close during slow dances, but not during the fast songs.
