Why was George Allen considered a frontrunner for the GOP nomination?

I know this is old news but, Why was then Senator George Allen considered a frontrunner for the 2008 Republican Nomination?

Was it his experience in the United States Senate and the Virginian Governorship? Was it his conservative ideals?

What made George Allen a frontrunner for the 2008 Republican Nomination?

Because of his wide bredth and depth of his experience, his successful tenure as Virginia governor, and his ability to win over all the important factions of the Republican Party (ie., social, foreign policy, and fiscal conservatives), in addition to his fairly down-to-earth and very friendly personality.

Then the 'macaca' comment exposed him as a buffoon, of course, and all else is history.  SR Sidarth and Jim Webb quite possibly prevented a turd like Allen from ever assuming the presidency, because make no mistake, Allen would have made a very formidable candidate, and he was the next-in-line in the Republican Party dynasty for the White House, whether it be in 2008, 2012, or 2016

I doubt that Allen would ever have won the Presidency or even the Republican nomination, because the same flaws that doomed him in last year's Senate race would have come to the surface in those races as well. You're right about one thing, though-- he is a buffoon.

He is working for Fred Thompson now, by the way.
