Davis' widow will run for the Republicans, but will still likely receive Republican challengers.

I think they're picking by convention here, right?  I can't see them not picking the grieving husband, but who knows?

When Republicans pick a nominee by convention, it's usually the most right-wing candidate.

That's why, in the Senate race, Mark Warner is going to beat Jim Gilmore instead of Tom Davis.

By-election is a British or foreign term that is not used in U.S. Politics. The usual term is "special election".

Governor Kaine has set the special election for December 11.

I know the GOP is choosing their candidate by convention.  Are any Democrats interested and running?  How about third parties or Indy candidates?  When is the filing deadline?

Yes, I am too lazy to look this stuff up.  Tongue

"By-election" is perfectly acceptable in American English. It's "special election" which is strange.

The only Democrats I've even heard mentioned are '06 candidate / foot-in-mouth-eulogizer Shawn Michael O'Donnell, and Philip Forgit, an Iraq vet who ran an unsuccessful House of Delegates race in '03.

The term isn't used in the United States. No one would know what it means. Its acceptable on the Atlas of course, since we have many International members. But you can't say its okay for use in American English when its never been used here.
