Unless you've been living under a rock for months, you are aware of all those recent discoveries and recalls of Chinese goods that are found to be dangerous/defective/unsafe/whatever. They've included blankets with formaldehyde, dog food with melamine, toothpaste with antifreeze, toys with parts that can break off and choke kids, exploding cell phone batteries, and whatever else. So what, if anything, needs to be done (other than the usual protectionist cries of "OMG LOL!!11!! 5T0P CH1N3Z3 9OODZ!!!!111)?

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm personally making sure that everything that goes in either my body or the body of someone I care about was made entirely in a first-world country. Tongue

I avoid products made in China.  I am very glad that the new agricultural bill includes a regulation that puts the country of origin on all meat and produce, so that you can know exactly where the orange you're eating came from.  A great win for the Democrats, in my opinion.

I think we need to adopt strict standards and bar the importation of any products that are made in conditions less safe than those products that are produced in America.

Free trade would be alright if we weren't completely throwing product integrity, safety, and workplace safety out the window when we export our jobs out of hte country.

All products coming into the U.S. from abroad should be subject to the same laws as those produced in our own country.  Stop giving multinational corporations a free lunch.

Well, it would be good to use trade agreements to increase chinese saftey standards, but other then that, alot of it is up to the consumer, though I do support laws ensuring that country of origin is on ALL products

Avoid anything 'Made in China'.  And have the US government follow suit, even if it results in a trade war between the two countries.  It seems only a trade war will spur China to actually strengthen regulations and increase transparency when it comes to the products they export.

All oranges that come to the US stores in the summertime are from Brazil. Thats a pretty easy answer. In the winter juice oranges come from Florida and table oranges come from California. Anyhow, I certainly do not consume any product made in China. The easiest way to avoid that as well is never buy food from a Dollar Store/Tree/General, etc.

Yes. Usually cheap and sketchy stuff but if you want a cheap one time treat that's different than the norm they  can have some interesting stuff sometimes.

Note that I said cheap and SKETCHY stuff so the "made in china" was implied.

That's  really very interesting, fellows.  I normally don't buy food outside of restaurants, but used to go to the 'Global' food stores for Eastern European treats (odd mayonaisse and mustard, curious pickles, etc.)

Perhaps I will venture into the 'Dollar Store' if I ever return to the  Bad Place.  Come to think of it I used to  cruise for hookers near one in a bad neighborhood.
