Fantastic idea!

It is essential that if and when Biden withdraws, there is a legitimate contest for the nomination, however short, and the party isn’t just anointing someone.

This feels like wish casting.

If they get rid of Biden, Kamala is the only viable option, logistically and politically. The optics of shunting her aside too would be terrible. And she isn't even that bad of an option, in my opinion. I mean, she's not great, but she's clearly better than Biden.

Contest how? The only practical option is to release delegates. You can't actually have votes.

I don't think very many people care about a democratic selection of the Dem candidate, lol. It's not like there was any substantial protest vote against Biden, and if anything I suspect that the only people opposed to replacing him are people who are just scared of losing if they do so it's not like they won't vote for the nominee. This isn't 2016, there is no notable leftwing figure that anyone cares about and there is no one in consideration that would be less popular than Biden. There'll be some demonstrators at the event dressed as terrorists, but they'll be there no matter what, and they certainly don't care who the candidate ends up being.

The only way this would happen is:

1. Biden withdraws voluntarily (seems unlikely)
2. Biden not endorsing Harris, if he withdraws (even more unlikely) and
3. Biden specifically asking for this, so his delegates are officially released (almost impossible)

So, in short, it ain't happening.  If Biden withdraws or is pushed out, it will be Harris taking over by default.  If the Democratic party tries to do something along these lines, WI, PA and AZ won't be swing states and places like New Jersey and New Mexico will be in play.
