Taiwan scrambled jets and put missile, naval and land units on alert Thursday over Chinese military exercises being conducted around the self-governing island democracy where a new president took office this week.

China’s military said its two-day exercises around Taiwan were punishment for separatist forces seeking independence. Beijing claims the island is part of China’s national territory and the People’s Liberation Army sends navy ships and warplanes into the Taiwan Strait and other areas around the island almost daily to wear down Taiwan’s defenses and seek to intimidate its people, who firmly back their de facto independence.

The joint drills of the PLA Eastern Theater Command are a necessary and legitimate move to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, crack down on “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and their separatist moves and send a warning to external interference and provocation. It is fully consistent with international law and common practices. 

I need to stress that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. This is both a fact based on history and the true status quo, and it will remain so in the future. “Taiwan independence” is doomed to fail. The Chinese people will not be deterred from defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity. The 1.4 billion strong Chinese people will resolutely push back any separatist activity for “Taiwan independence”. Anyone seeking “Taiwan independence” will find themselves crushed by the historic trend of China’s complete reunification.

We urge the US to stop conniving at or supporting “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and stop meddling in China’s internal affairs. Any attempt to endanger China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity will be met with China’s resolute response.

There are not many posters here who unironically quote government press releases, not even the biggest hacks for Biden or Israel. While the Chinese governments stance is firm, surely they must realize that nations are social constructs, and despite their appeals to the "true status quo", the reality is that Taiwan has been de facto self-governing independently since 1949, and it's people have formed a new national identity in the past 30 years.

Even if China were to occupy Taiwan, it would be forced to repress a hostile population, almost none of which want to join the PRC. Further, any attempt to take Taiwan by force would likely trigger a formal declaration of independence, which would likely be recognized by many world governments. And the more attempts at intimidation China tries to do, the more resentment and backlash it will generate among the people of Taiwan, further fueling pro-independence sentiment. As China is supposedly pragmatic and it has compromised on border issues in the past, it is unwise that it is unwilling to entertain forma compromise on the Taiwan issue.
