Every jurisdiction in the Americas south of the continental US. This is slightly broader than "New World society in the Americas that was colonized by a Romance-speaking European country". Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas are former British colonies like the US and Canada, but the way their societies and cultures developed was more similar to other countries in the region.

The US Census Bureau uses the terms "Hispanic" and "Latino" interchangeably...which I think is dumb.

I was in Belize in January, and I think it's fair to call Belizeans Latino too.  A lot are descended from Spaniards (often mixed with Mayans).  Almost half of Belizeans speak Spanish as their first language even though English is the official language.  At least, away from the coast/islands.  San Ignacio feels very Latino.

Belize felt like a cross between the USA and Latin America (the American influences being the use of the dollar*, a lack of Metric usage**, and English as the official language).

*The official currency is the Belizean Dollar (pegged to USD at exactly 2:1), but they're used interchangably with USD since it's a fixed exchange rate.

**Belize is never listed as a non-Metric country, but I think it should be.  All road signs were in American units, the meteorological service reports temperatures in Fahrenheit first, and I think locals mostly think in terms of feet, pounds, and miles.

Latinos are from Latin American; all of these categories could be described as Hispanic.

No, because Hispanic means from a Spanish-speaking country.

But then what about Haiti? I've never seen anyone call them "latino".

Yes, so only Spaniards (out of the poll options) are Latino, according to the US Census Bureau; Latino and Hispanic mean exactly the same thing to them.

I disagree with them though, and like you, I only voted Brazilians.

No, because Hispanic means from a Spanish-speaking country.

Both modern-day Spain and Portugal were part of the Ancient Roman province of Hispania from which the term "Hispanic" is derived.  When the U.S. Census Bureau debuted the term "Hispanic" in the 1970 Census it was defined to include "persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central or South American, or others of Spanish or Portuguese culture or origin, regardless of race."  The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has historically had Portuguese members.

Portugal was called Lusitania, not Hispania

Portugal was called Lusitania, not Hispania

The Romans conquered Iberia in 218 BC.  The peninsula was divided into three administrative regions:  Baetica, Tarraconensis, and Lusitania but Ancient Romans would have used the term Hispania to refer to them collectively.

Many in Belize are of Spanish descent(despite its British roots politically) and Brazil is obviously in South America(despite having a different language:think Iran for a Middle Eastern equivalent linguistically as they do not speak Arabic there). The Philippines are an Asian country once colonized by Spain, but are more like Indonesia than Mexico(despite being Catholic). The others are in Europe.
