The rise in English corresponds almost exactly with the lack of an "American" option.

2020 census

English  46.6 million
German  45 million
Irish  38.6 million
Italian  16.8 million
Polish  8.6 million
Scottish  8.4 million
French  8 million
Swedish  3.8 million
Norwegian  3.8 million
Dutch  3.6 million

2022 ACS

German  41.1 million
English  31.4 million
Irish  30.7 million
Italian  16 million
American (single ancestry)  14.9 million
Polish  8.2 million
French  6.3 million
Scottish  5.2 million
Norwegian  3.9 million
Swedish  3.3 million
Dutch  3 million
