The proponents of the Kennedy amnesty bill wanted to rush through the bill this week before Senators had a chance to read the bill.

Twenty four hours ago we were told that a cloture vote would be scheduled for today to complete the vote within the week.

Well, enough Senators heard from their constituents to prevent this:
