I find it OK as a popular history book for a free time, but not as a popular economic history book. Also, it kind of cherry pick facts in most cases. Its analysis is too simple to me. Well, it tells entertaining stories.

Like everything, it's not exactly 100% accurate, and it's outdated.

Since it's publication the West has become less democratic, especially Europe as it's economy has stagnated and declined.

A Democracy in economic decline becomes Authoritarian due to the instinct of self preservation through oppression, not more Democratic. That is the european experience.

Also a state becomes more Democratic when it's establishment is fractured.
When the oligarchs, the feudal lords, the party bosses start to fight each other for power and need public support.
