According to the public prosecutor's office, these comments are not just defamatory. "These are not just words; they are messages. Mr. Soral has hatred and contempt for homosexuals," said Eric Kaltenrieder, the public prosecutor.

Kaltenrieder had asked for three months' imprisonment as part of a "penal logic" to "dissuade the defendant from re-offending", since Soral had already been convicted on some 20 occasions in France, largely for offences of provocation to hatred, defamation and anti-Semitic insult.

While I don't approve, you can kinda understand why Europe might be a little more sensitive about far right homophobic anti-Semites -- especially those convicted 20 times before for hate-related offenses. This guy is obviously asking for it, and I mean that quite literally. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted this to happen to be a martyr, and between that and the small likelihood this "penal logic" will actually "dissuade the defendant from re-offending," I kinda wish they hadn't taken the bait. And that's why I don't approve and prefer the US's free speech. Let these hateful idiots rant and rave. They ARE just words, regardless of the hatred and contempt behind them. Don't give them the time of day, simply let them expose their ugly bigotry to the world and make fools of themselves, and it's likely that the social ramifications will be more than enough punishment for them.

I was also under the impression that it was one of the fattest, but I've just checked the recent data and this is, apparently, quite wrong. Was anyone else similarly mistaken?

it's a very left wing person doing the punishing, but it is not "left" to shut down "mean" speech.  At least not traditionally.  I get that they have embraced the soft in the last few decades, it's why I make fun of them for it.

I suppose my romantic views of the left being the true champions of free speech needs to be finally put to bed as they have clearly ceded that job to someone else.

Yeah, Switzerland was always one of the most conservative countries in Europe. Look at women's suffrage or even their healthcare system.
