Interesting idea... I'll have a close look at it later. My initial guess would be that the Dippers would do well in MN, ND (locally at least. Nationally it'd be about personalities), MI, WV, Western PA, probably Rhode Island... more soon.
Oh and Louisiana would be ultra-Grit. Remember the Cajun's...

Yes, I reckon ND and IA would vote similar to Saskatchewan, NDP. All those farmers and blue collar workers. They might do well in VT too, which has a strong Independent streak.

I think seriously speaking the only province in Canada the GOP could and indeed would win is Alberta. They might do fairly well in BC, Sask and Manitoba but not in the face of a moderate Democrat.

Very interesting. I think that Quebec would still have the Bloc though. Seperatists.... But if you wanted to eliminate that it would go largely Dem. They're pretty Liberal out there.

Quebec would vote Dem and would be very anti-gay marraige amendment.  They could form their own party, like a Goerge Wallace party.

Vermont doesn't have an independent streak, it has a libertarian streak and a socialist streak that can only manifest -especially when thrown together- as an independent streak.  This is distinct from say, certain Southern demographics which have regionalist, nationalist and authoritarian tendencies that manifest as independent streaks.  Vermont has the weakest gun control laws in the entire country, and most of the Western world.

Vermont would likely be an NDP-CPC split with the Ben and Jerry's folks going NDP and the Ethan Allen types going CPC for lack of any decent options, or maybe going minor party (which Vermont has a tendency to do, both in state legislature and with Jeffords and Sanders).

Anyway, ultimately a two-party system would re-emerge because we're Presidential and not Parliamentary.  Only one group can win the office so you maximize your chances by pooling into the biggest possible groups - ending with two.  In Canada the Libs and NDP can come together to form a government.  There'd have to be same big change like fusion voting or IRV to make it viable in the long term.

ND - Last two times it went Democrat for President were '64 and '36, two major landslides.  It voted against FDR twice, that's somewhat exceptional.  Sure, the Scandinavians inhabit the area and fuss up the politics, but that's mostly MN and WI.  WI would be very likely to go NDP and so would MN.

I struggle within this system because ultimately the Canadian parties don't account for the big gap in ideologies between Westerners and Southerners, who are actually pretty different despite voting for the same candidates of late.  They'd be stuck in a CPC that probably better fits the Midwestern Republicans while keeping space open for northeastern GOPers (like the US version of Red Tories).
