How was he doing? Seemed to be a larger than life figure even when mayor with large plusses and large minuses. He was booed at events yet twice won reelection by landslide margins.

Aside from his relative inaction during the AIDS crisis - which feels a bit like historic revisionism, given how little was known about the disease then and how disinterested the federal government was in helping - he was clearly one of NY's best Mayors. Probably second to Bloomberg in the modern era.
