Sometimes I suspect that it is fake since he was born in New England and wants to downplay it.

Do you think his accent is fake?

No, he didn't really grow up in New England, but in mod-20th Century Texas.

And, your accent is not fixed at one point in life.  If you were to move to a different part of the country today, in 10 years, your accent would likely be at least somewhat different due to subconsciously adopting vocabulary and pronunciations of those around you.

He lays it on thick. Why wouldn't he just sound like his dad, who didn't have that accent at all. Jeb also doesn't have the accent or any accent really. It's an affectation after GWB lost an early political race and then invented a whole new persona.

I don't believe so, at least it doesn't like in my view. I actually like his accent.

No. He moved to Texas when he was 2 years old, which is still pretty early in a child's speech and language development.

Because he wasn’t raised in Greenwich, Connecticut in the 1920s/30s?

Quote
Jeb also doesn't have the accent or any accent really.

Well he was about six when the Bushes moved to a rich suburban part of Houston. And as an adult he moved to Miami and of course was eventually elected Governor of Florida. If anything Jeb! downplayed whatever level of Texas accent he had had in the past because Florida is not a typical Southern state, and certainly doesn’t have the twangy Southwestern culture of Texas.

Though I do agree that Dubya leaned into his accent for political purposes in Texas, but that just means he’s being a politician.

He's not smart or talented enough to fake an accent.

I've always suspected so, since the days of the '00 campaign. It just seemed so thick and deliberate and unnatural. His gait as well, the way he holds (or held) his arms out to his side, as if to give himself some artificial kind of "swagger." Always seemed fake and deliberate to me as well.

I read about that. He got "out-bubba'd" I remembered the article saying.

Bush W got lucky in 2000/2004 the reason why Rs lost because 2006/2008 we were in a Great Recession due to Katrina he was exactly where Biden is 47/51 and 5% unemployment in 2000/2004

He is a War criminal Abu Garib the reason why he isn't considered like Trump he wasn't impeached because like Reagan Ds only regained Congress in the final 2 yrs of his Term

There is nothing about Bush W that's Ds are happy about that's why Obama was the only blk male Leader to mourn his father Rev Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Barber and they are all pastors passed on coming to his funeral and as soon as Carter passed they will be there

What would indicate whether or not this is true is an audio recording in a private and informal setting in which he is certain he won't be heard by the general public. It is known, from the infamous 'Bigotgate' incident in 2010, that former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown probably speaks with a stronger Scottish accent in private and informal settings.

Of course, there's no way anybody could be that inarticulate and amount to anything.

And, your accent is not fixed at one point in life.  If you were to move to a different part of the country today, in 10 years, your accent would likely be at least somewhat different due to subconsciously adopting vocabulary and pronunciations of those around you.

That really depends on the age, and on the level of self-consciousness around the accent, notably whether people struggle to understand you. It's very common to not change accents at all after 20.

Here's Christopher Hitchens 30 years after he moved to the US.

Not really.  Sure he might exaggerate parts here and there for affect, but the general core is definitely Texan.

How many politicians are like Hitler and sound totally different in private?

J. William Fulbright was like that.

Perhaps because the elder Bush spent his whole childhood in New England, while his son grew up in West Texas?

(And no, my guess is it isn’t fake.)

Maybe not the accent- though he probably plays it up- but definitely the Southern folksiness and piousness given his comments on thinking the GOP shouldn't "kick gays".

Do you think his accent is fake?

It clearly was.

He grew up in the same town as Michael Bolton.

Dubya may have been born in New Haven, CT but he grew up in Texas. His accent is real (though he played up his "folksiness").

He was 2 when his parents moved. The only accent he would have is "toddler babble" lol.
