I went to Italy and Greece last summer. During part of my trip in Greece, we took a cruise. Yeah, this is the same ship that I was on...  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070408/ap_on_re_eu/greece_cruise_ship

I'm still searching for the data on the ship to see what form of latteral thrusters it had.  If the Captain is correct that the currents were pushing the ship, the latteral thrusters (or the lack there of) would play a big role in the investigation.  Since I don't know anything about the waters in which the accident occurred (I'm assuming there is a cleared channel for low-drafting vessels to pass), I'm as much in the dark at the moment as the rest of you.  My brother is putting money on the bow thrusters being choked by silt from the sea floor, causing it to fail and the ship drifting with the current.
