2008: Clinton/Kaine (D) vs Rice/Pawlenty (R) - who wins?

Let's say Condoleezza Rice is more willing to enter electoral politics and successfully wins the Republican nomination for President in 2008, picking Tim Pawlenty as her running mate. Meanwhile Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic primary, Obama running a slightly weaker campaign than in reality.

What would the effect be of the first black major party presidential candidate being a Republican? And what would the likely result of the election be? I'm thinking that conservative Democrats would probably hold up in the South for a bit longer than they did in reality.

I think Hillary still wins- it would’ve been very hard for any republican to win in the 2008 national environment tbh. The Republican nominee had too many things going against them, and Rice would not be any different
