Crazy that a new poster who’s been here less than 24 hours found a 5 year old thread to bump for no reason.

Anyway, Dems going back to their 2012 position on Russia would be a massive step backwards.

Romney was on the ball, and virtually all the criticism he recieved over his stance on Russia was unfair and wrong.

In hindsight, the Republican Party is #1, Xi's regime in China is #2, and Putin's Russia is a distant #3. (With the mix of climate change and late-stage capitalism trumping them all, but establishment pols from either party don't like to address that mucb.)

Yeah, I admit it. Romney was absolutely right and Obama was wrong about Russia. But that doesn't change the fact that Obama was absolutely right and Romney was absolutely wrong about most other issues.

Paul Ryan called for 20 percent tax cuts on Corporate taxes in 2012 and passed it as Veep just like Gore would of kept top rates at 40 not 35 and low workers to 15 and Rs still blame Clinton for the recession

He was wrong on taxes and so was Bush W and was a war criminal that caused Abu Grab, Pelosi impeached Trump she regrets for not impeaching Bush W on Abu Grab

Man, this thread was 5 years ago. Where has the time gone.

Anyway, I largely still agree with my earlier viewpoint (kinda weird how that discussion went into talking about the Mongols though lol). If anything the war in Ukraine has shown that Russia isn't the US' number 1 geopolitical foe, instead just being an incompetent regional power that vastly overestimated its own capabilities. In fact, as of now, almost every play that Russia has made as a "geopolitical foe" has ended with their ability to project power reduced.

Romney wasn't right then, and he still isn't right now. China, throughout the last decade, has remained the actual threat.

Romney was clearly wrong about the Russia *of 2012*, which is what matters most when assessing these kinds of remarks.

China is obviously the top geopolitical threat.

Romney was wrong. His comment was insane given the threat China (and to a lesser degree Iran and North Korea at the time) poses to the US.

We all know the famous moment from the third debate in 2012, when President Obama slammed Mitt Romney for calling Russia our No. 1 geo-political foe saying  "The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back".

Who's "we" and who's "the left"?

China is still the greatest geopolitical threat of the United States.

Russia is threat #2 but they don't compare to China. Some major American studios don't edit their content to appease Russia but guess which country they do that for? Oh yeah, China (though this isn't done as much as post-COVID).

I suppose I have to get into the mindset of myself from 5 years ago to answer your question. "We" would mean the general consensus of the forum, and the "left" would be those liberals who became particularly concerned about Russian aggression/meddling during the Trump administration.

Romney has stated when asked about this that Russia is the greatest geopolitical foe but China is the greatest threat
