I have only attended seated concerts, other than ones in public places and things like that.

I saw him in 2010.

Maybe the worst vocal performance I've ever heard at a concert, but goddamn it, I'm going to be able to tell my kids and grandkids that I saw the greatest songwriter of all-time live, long after he is gone, so it was totally worth it.

Listening to Blood on the Tracks right now btw, one of the greatest albums of all-time.

My parents saw him around that time too and said he was terrible.

And as you may or may not know, I actually DO own some of his records. However I would only go see him if I had a time machine.

Well I'm glad to see you at least respect one of Minnesota's two greatest musical legends, along with Prince of course.

I actually appreciate a lot of that Prince did for the whole Twin Cities music scene. It all benefited, and yes that even included the hardcore/emo side of things. I live fairly close to a record store sort of considered his "unofficial" one and I know they rake in big bucks on certain dates and from Paisley Park tourists.

Prince is of course also responsible for First Avenue being what it is today, and considering how many shows I've been there that were amazing that's a massive boost. I like many others are not particularly big on First Avenue as a company today simply due to that it has close to a quasi-monopoly on mid-sized venues in the Twin Cities now (ever since the Triple Rock closed it started buying up all the other ones, and now it owns basically all of them except for the Fillmore and Varsity which are owned by the far far worse Live Nation, and the Amsterdam in St. Paul where it seems like half of their shows are "First Avenue Presents" now. They even bought The Palace in St. Paul which wasn't even some ancient iconic venue, it only opened about 5 years earlier! I was actually at a show at a First Avenue venue last night with the Turf Club in St. Paul, but it really shouldn't be a First Avenue venue, especially considering it predates First Avenue proper!) but no one can deny First Avenue is a legendary place to go to and works as a venue pretty well.

And he does have some good songs. I've always enjoyed this one:

Also thought this was great as the DFL's official victory song in 2018 celebrating Walz's win.

Anyway I am so far the only no vote, lol. And I've been to close to 400!

There's actually three I've looked into recently, although it's unlikely I'll go to any of them seated.

The first is of course Blink-182, but even seated prices there are insane, so it's probably just not going to happen.

And then there's Fall Out Boy who aren't even playing here but some outdoor amphitheater in a small town in Wisconsin about 45 minutes away...but I'm not interested in the openers and am frankly not interested in seeing Fall Out Boy now unless they only played songs from the first two albums. Funny this one actually does have cheap tickets on the "lawn" behind the seated portion, but I have no doubt that's a terrible view and amounts to just being near it as opposed to "at it", assuming I was even interested considering the former.

The last is Paramore, but prices for that one aren't quite as insane as the former two including pit prices, so I've kind of decided I'm either going to get a pit ticket or not go at all. I am NOT going to listen to "Misery Business" or "That's What You Get" sitting down!

I've been to a lot and performed in some, too. My most memorable would be seeing Ella Fitzgerald at the Lincoln Center in 1981. What she could do with her voice was amazing.

Honorable mention was working one night in Bonnie Raitt's road crew as a follow-spot operator at the age of 17. Another was seeing Aaron Copeland conduct the St Paul Chamber Orchestra from balcony seats behind the orchestra.

It’s a shame what happened to First Avenue though, with them cowering away from booking Dave Chappelle recently.

Nah they were totally fine with it and stood to make tons of money, it's that they couldn't get enough staff who agreed to work it because they were all browbeat into refusing and shamed by loudmouths in those circles. I heard he actually kind of sucked though and has for the last year or so and is kind of just phoning it in.

I doubt they were worried about boycotts considering what I said above, the only people "boycotting" First Avenue are whiny conservatives who threw a fit while they had a vaccine card mandate and were posting tweets and comments like "haha this is why no one is going to your stupid concerts anyway!" about the same time First Avenue had two sold out ones on that weekend...they live in their own world. The truth of course is those people aren't really boycotting it because they never were going to First Avenue anyway.

Kind of reminds me of when some people here a little bit before Covid tried to get people to promise to boycott any show that had all white males (which later got amended to all "white cis people") playing...approximately 8 people got on board and then it just kind of collapsed and was forgotten.

Have his vocals ever been good?

I went to a jazz concert with my mom once because we got the tickets for free from our neighbors who could go. We left at intermission.

I’ve seen the local philharmonic and Kenny Loggins as well. Both seated. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a standing only concert, but I’m not much of a concert person.

They have to grow on you a little but once they do... I honestly love them on his early records, including his early live recordings. They fit his songs perfectly, which is why I've never agreed with the somewhat common claim that Dylan songs are better when covered. Very rarely is that true (Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Cash are two of the few who can claim they ever improved on Bob). Even in his more recent work, though very raspy and obviously his voice is shot from smoking, it isn't as terrible as it was seeing him live.

He also proved he could croon more smoothly and "normally" on Nashville Skyline and other tracks from that era. So he didn't HAVE to sing that way, it was a stylistic choice.
