Just found this. Definitely one of the best short stories I've ever read.

I recall reading Asimov's autobiography, and he said that occasionally people would say to him, "There was one of your stories I really liked, but I can't remember the title."  He'd immediately respond "The Last Question" -- which almost always turned out to be the one they were looking for.

I don't think I've ever read it.  But I loved his Library of the Universe series as a kid.  It was a encyclopedic collection of 20 or so books that were only like 30 pages each, lots of pictures and little side-blurbs with interesting factoids.

I have no idea what prompted my parents to buy that series for me. Maybe they just wanted to settle my ass down.   (and it worked!  I read every single book front-to-back...multiple times)
