It's one event. ONE. ONE. ONE. ONE. ONE. Read it again, ONE. They can still hold other events that are open to all and there is nothing to suggest that preferential hiring was going to occur.

Ummmm. Like what the Hell are you talking about?
Is that suppose to be some kind of come-back?

I'm not going to let someone tell me with a straight face that POC and women wouldn't attend a job fair unless it explicitly banned certain demographics from attending. It's wishful thinking. If the league has such a strong "whites only" image then how could there be such a large, disenfranchised non-white fan base and potential applicant pool in the first place?

Even still, it's common practice to include in job postings themselves notes saying that applications from certain marginalized groups are encouraged. The same logic would hold that marginalized people would not apply for a job unless it explicitly said they would only consider applications from that group. You will lose all credibility if you try to argue this is also common.

The NHL knows it's own reputation and likely has the data to support it which is why they are on a push for DEI. Certain demographics (mainly African-Americans) would probably not even consider an NHL job fair or job listing based on the perception that a White organization would not hire them. A job fair that sounds like the league is open to hiring persons of color is a different story because people of color would attend if they felt as if they had a fair chance. Companies find talent by casting a wider net.

It's not a guarantee but it's daft and strains credulity to argue that there is no connection between job fairs and guarantee of employment. Under your logic it's just as justifiable for the NHL to have a whites-only job fair because "a job fair is not a guarantee of employment".

I didn't say there was not connection, just that there is no guarantee of employment. One still has to have the proper qualifications to get a job. You have no legal argument that anyone's civil rights were violated or even at risk of being violated. The job fair never happened anyway.

If black people account for 70% of the NBA and 60% of the NFL (massively overrepresented) then it would seem to make sense that other leagues would have less black people? Maybe they just aren't interested in Hockey or don't live in places where hockey is popular (due to things like culture or the climate like someone else said). I see no reason to increase their numbers if they don't care about the sport, there is not an unlimited supply of qualified athletes and trying to "affirmative action" it could lead to poor performing blacks in a team of competent white players which would just exacerbate the perception that the sport is not for them. Similar stuff happened when South Africa tried to forcefully "diversify"their rugby and cricket league.

Companies do this when their workforces are overwhelmingly white and male because of who-knows-who and need to make specific outreach to ensure diverse Americans are aware of opportunities that they don't hear about or can't envision themself in. It's not hard to see why hockey would historically be non-diverse.

It seems like DeSantis and anyone cheering this on is upset with non-white Americans having an opportunity to get a job in an industry traditionally hostile to them.

Is hockey less diverse than the NBA or the NFL?
It is actually more diverse. The NBA is like 90% Americans, the NFL is basically all Americans, while the NHL has a pretty good mix of Americans, Canadians and Europeans. If you had a group of 8 black Americans, a white American and a white European, and a group of 10 white guys from from 6 different countries, which is more diverse?

After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' office blasted the National Hockey League for hosting a "discriminatory" job fair that only allows certain groups of people to attend, the league backtracked and said the event is open to all individuals over 18-years-old.

The fact that this is a bad thing in your opinion is totally and utterly laughable.

What specific problem do you have with the job fair as it was originally planned?

Affirmative Action is terrible and I am vehemently opposed to it
