1996 KY Amendment 1 removed from the state constitution already unenforceable requirements for a poll tax and racially segregated schools; in Elliott County, the Yes share for this amendment was lower than the share of the vote Obama would recieve there in the 2008 Presidential race

Who voted no on Amendment 1 in 1996 and then Obama in 2008 there?

Conservative Yellow Dog Dem but what's more interesting is that every county that voted No was an Ancestral Republican one although I'm sure by then Unionist memories have faded and they only voted "R" for ancestral/cultural reasons. Also, Martin County was the only no/Bill Clinton county. Of course since 2000 that county has been solidly Republican.

Being Unionist and being not racist are two different things also.

There was a lot of support for the Union even in Northern states, that didn't extent beyond that to support equality for blacks during the Civil War.
