It's still shocking to see Grassley underperforming Reynolds by so much, even when the narrative as to why makes sense.

And I would have thought Grassley would have recovered some ground with that sexual assault allegation against Franken. But that doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. He'll still win easily, but Franken will clear 40% and become the first of Grassley's opponents since Culver in 1980 to do so.

I think I'm out of the loop on this one; what is the narrative?

The narrative is that Grassley is too old (he turned 89 last month) and that he is underperforming this year because some Iowans are concerned about that, similar to how Strom Thurmond underperformed in his last reelection in 1996 at age 94. In addition to this, polarization makes it unlikely that Grassley will win a smashing landslide comparable to those in prior election cycles, when Iowa was much more elastic.

Honestly, even getting into single digits would be pretty good for Franken here. Given this is Cygnal and it's an R internal, still positive.

I don't think Franken will do that well, particularly in the aftermath of that sexual assault allegation. Grassley still does have some residual goodwill.
