Is Pelosi just a set up for a Hillary run in '08?  Think about it... most people aren't going to pay attention to anything Pelosi does as Speaker.  Having her there however "get's people used" to the idea of women is national power possitions.  It also jazzes up the womens movment for a Hillary run in 08.  I'm sure this is far from an original thought, but discuss.

It's a fascinating coincidence, but I doubt that is why Pelosi was elected speaker.

I doubt it.

What an amazing coincidence, the Speaker of the House and one of the people running for President have the same gender.

Pelosi is speaker of the House b/c she wanted it, she fought for it, and she earned it.  Having said that, if Pelosi is able to boost the credidbility of women in office even in the slightest, Hillary will benefit.  However, should Nancy be viewed as inept come 2008 I think it would kill any chance Hillary has.

Hillary may well benefit from having a prominent woman as a leader of an entire half of a branch of government.  However, I seriously doubt that this was actually an intended result.  Pelosi was elected Minority Party Leader in 2002.  The Democrats went on to suffer losses in Congress that year and again in 2004 after only gaining one single House seat in 2000.  There's no way that the Democrats could have possibly predicted at that time that 2006 would be the exact year in which they would retake the House.

After 9/11, there were many people who likely made an absolute killing on the stock market as a result of the effects 9/11 had on it.  This does not mean that they had anything to do with 9/11, however.  Coincidences can and do happen, and I believe that Pelosi's prominence just as Hillary is setting herself up to run for president is nothing more than one of them.

If anything the opposite arguement could be made, that Pelosi as speaker hurts Clinton's chances for 2008, since the public may not be ready for both a woman President and woman Speaker of the House at the same time (as obviously, if Clinton or any other Democrat wins the White House in 2008, it would be extremely unlikely that the Republicans could simultaneously win back control of the House of Representatives).
