There are both best and worst counties in each state even including Mississippi, New Mexico, etc. Literally the worst county in Wisconsin is Adams County, it is just a rural half forested half grassland county in the center of the state.

Worst in what way?

The county I'd least like to live in?

The least pretty?

The most dangerous?

You have to be more specific than this.

I suppose it's each poster's subjective definition of 'best' and 'worst' and to their discretion (in other words, to each their own).

What I really hope we won't see here is blue avatars naming some ultra-liberal county as the 'worst' in their state, and red avatars naming some ultra-conservative county as the 'worst' in their state. It's predictable, adds nothing of value, and there's already a multipage thread on that. That said, I fear that's what's going to happen here pretty soon.

That said, I think there are a few that are fairly obvious - it's pretty clear, for instance, that McDowell is WV's worst county.

McDowell County's population has decreased from almost 100,000 in 1950 to less than 20,000 in 2020. The people of McDowell Country are among the unhealthiest of any county in the U.S. with high rates of drug abuse and poverty and a life expectancy well below the U.S. average. After a long history of supporting Democrats in Presidential elections, the county has voted strongly Republican since 2012.

This. A blue avatar (Cody) attested to how much worse the WV coalfields (and he highlighted McDowell County) are than the northern part of the state, closer to DC/PA/MD/NOVA. The only part I could do without is the last sentence - again, it's not really relevant to bring up political voting histories here.

Don't blame me, I quoted wikipedia. I find all of it objectionable.

In Missouri while St Louis City is ranked high in crime per capita, it is not that awful to live! Great food, bars, free zoo, and ofc the Gateway Arch! Pemiscot county is the worst in MO, the towns have been declining, proximity to Cairo IL, and being halfway between St Louis and Memphis doesn't really helps matters

I dunno, I find it a bit more objectionable/tasteless to judge a place for being poor than to judge it on its voting record.

These lists are always going to be subjective and tainted by some kind of bias because people have different heuristics. At least Atlas's answers aren't going to be whichever county has the highest Black population, as often seems to be the answer in YouTube lists like this.

With that in mind, the clear answer for worst county in WV is Putnam.

These kinds of threads are incredibly stupid and ruin an otherwise serious board.
