This has been bugging me all along.  (The resemblance itself, not the possibility of people taking it seriously.)  There've got to be at least two people in New Jersey who think like I do.

I think I coined the nickname "Mendacious Menendez" a while back.
I bet a couple of Princeton Students might hold that against Menendez, but most people who vote against him will do so based on his record of corruption.

Woah!  I may live in what was once coal country, but believe me, my community would fit much better in SE Pennsylvania.  My school district is consistently one of the best public districts in the nation. (Mt. Lebanon School district, look it up)

I will admit that you guys are very well educated people and have made the most out of your careers but I am left wondering...why is your state consisently one of the worst in the country and why do you constantly complain about your elected officials and then go on to re-elect them? Agreed if New Jersey was any other state in the union Kean would be sailing to victory no matter what Menendez is also one of the pmost unpopuler men in the Senate and you guys are going to elect him to a full term!

The only elected official I have a beef with is Menendez at this point but I would still approve of the job he is doing. Just depends on the poll you read whether or not we dissapprove of our politiicians and then reelect them again. Besides its better to have skeptics then to just trust everyone.

Even so, I doubt more than 25% of New Jerseyans know what mendacious means - not that that number would be any better elsewhere!

I'm in my fourth year of university, and I tend to have an abnormally large vocabulary (not bragging, just saying), and even I had to look up what the word meant.

I cant recall any election in NJ that has been called a landslide. Corzine wasnt hated in the senate, McGreevey wasnt hated until later in his term. Lautenberg was beloved, just hes never in the spotlight now. Politicians cant advertise themselves year round or call out for news everyday. We dont have our own media markets so NY focuses more on Hillary and Schumer who are very popular and media whores. Philly probably the same with PA politicians, thus the focus isnt on every move our politicians make but theirs.

New Jersey also has a very large urban poor population that is more easily swayed by machine politics. The NJ Democratic Party is sharply divided between the "reform Democrats" and the 'establishment Democrats". Right now, the establishment Democrats still control most offices, but the reform Democrats have been making steady gains. For example, most of the Democratic Representatives are reform Democrats (Rothman, Holt, Pallone, Andrews, etc.).

Otherwise, NJ is not "one of the worst in the country", and I'm really not sure why people from outside the state constantly have that impression. It's quite the opposite, in fact: in most respects, NJ is among the best states in the country.

Of course, you are right that New Jersey hates its elected officials. Almost everyone has a negative net approval rating. It's just the way things are; the alternatives (Kean) are never any better.

I would argue its the best in the country which a previous thread by me was made to show.
