Fun thread.

Abortion: Far Left
Affirmative Action: Right-Wing
Artwork Funding: Right-Wing
Assault Weapons Ban: Far Right
Campaign Finance Reform: Far Left
Capital Punishment: Far Left
Concealed Carry: Moderate Right
D.C. Statehood: Moderate Right
Defense Funding: Left-Wing
Environment: Moderate Left
Euthanasia: Left-Wing
Faith Based Initiatives: Left-Wing
Farm Subsidies: Libertarian (this is the only way to describe my position on this issue, as both the left and right seem to love handing out this particular kind of welfare)
Flag Burning Amendment: Far Left
Gay Adoption: Left-Wing
Gay Marriage: Far Left
Medicare/Medicaid: Right-Wing
Minimum Wage: Right-Wing
School Vouchers: Moderate Left
Racial Profiling: Left-Wing
United Nations: Idk what the left and right positions even are anymore on this
War on Iraq: Far Left

Interesting how many of the important issues of the mid-2000s I end up on the left of. Explains why I grew up being more sympathetic to the Democrats, perhaps.

Abortion: Center
It's hard for me to justify abortion and I'm really uncomfortable with the glorification of abortion that a lot of Democrats have adopted as a reaction to the right-wing attempts to ban it. That being said, I recognize why people would get an abortion and morally it's an unsettled issue and I'm uncomfortable with the Republican rhetoric on it as well which often sounds pretty dystopian. I'd rather we come up with some sort of compromise and collectively abandon it as a culture war issue.

Affirmative Action: Center
Not an issue I think about a lot so I'm less familiar with the specifics of it. I don't really care either way.

Artwork Funding: Left
Artwork and public art displays are a vital part of our culture which shouldn't be left entirely to profit. This is something which should be handled at the local level but cities should invest in beautification projects, add statues, murals on the sides of freeways/on walls, light displays, etc.

Assault Weapons Ban: Far Right
While I don't think this is an issue which should be debated along right vs. left lines, it falls into place like that in the American spectrum. It's clearly an infringement on the 2nd amendment which should be left entirely alone. I'm opposed to any ban on what sort of weapons citizens can own especially when the arms of the state (police/military) have access to those weapons while citizens don't. Not to mention enforcing such a ban would be an unmitigated disaster.

Campaign Finance Reform: Left
I feel like candidates shouldn't have much to work with. Give them equal air time down to the Libertarians and Greens and limit donations to a strict cap of maybe $100 per person. Not to mention super PACs which shouldn't exist.

Capital Punishment: Left
Opposed in pretty much all cases which don't deal with war crimes on a Hitler/Pol Pot level. And weirdly it seems like a lot of those cases get a slap on the wrist while innocent people get executed in the United States all the time. I don't trust the state to have the power of life or death over its citizens. Almost everybody can be rehabilitated (or at least their threat neutralized) with time.

Concealed Carry: Right
You shouldn't need a license to carry something you have the constitutional right to bear. That being said, businesses and events and anything like that should be able to disallow guns on their premises if they so choose.

D.C. Statehood: Far Left
D.C. should have become a state years ago. Denying anyone on American soil equal representation in Congress is an obvious infringement on voting rights. It also exists in the weird spot of sort of having self government while having congress able to overturn any law it passes which anybody who claims to care about states' rights should have an issue with.

Defense Funding: Far Left
Slash it. It's the clearest example of an oversized government. Not to mention obvious issues with where the money is going - taxpayers shouldn't be funding cruel wars or drone strikes or whatever is in the black budget.

Environment: Left
Nature is the most valuable thing we have - the force driving every living thing on earth - and letting it be exploited to the level it has is one of the gravest sins humanity has ever committed. Every living thing is unique in their own way and are a valuable contribution to the earth as a whole. We have to take a step back and re-integrate ourselves with nature.

Euthanasia: Right
I'm uncomfortable with the concept of doctors giving people poison. It's one of the areas where the slippery slope has shown its true ugly colors - allowed in a lot of places now for mental issues as well as physical and even talk of over-the-counter suicide pills. Stopping it before it gets to that point is imperative.

Faith Based Initiatives
I'm not at all familiar with this.

Farm Subsidies: Center
I think farm subsidies are good in terms of keeping prices down. At the same time, the government should focus more on combating big agriculture and get rid of seed patents etc. which are killing small farmers.

Flag Burning Amendment: Far Left
A clear violation of the principles America was founded on. Eerily dystopian and completely antithetical to free speech.

Gay Adoption: Left
There's not much of a good reason to be against gay adoption because even if it's like "well, they'd do better in a straight two-parent household" there aren't enough straight couples wanting to adopt all the kids in America. So would they be better with gay parents or none at all? Single people should be allowed to adopt as well as long as they're competent.

Gay Marriage: Far Left
Self-explanatory. Should be treated the same as straight marriage.

Medicare/Medicaid: Left
I'm not a policy geek but ideally they'd be broadened and combined into some sort of universal healthcare system.

Minimum Wage: Left
The minimum wage should be increased and so should overtime pay but more important is strengthened unions and a total overhauling of American work culture driven by that. It's a tough process because it's so ingrained in our psyche but must be done to ensure a better future. Government should have a heavy hand here.

School Vouchers: Center Right
Ideally more attention would be placed on fixing public schools. But until that happens no kid should be constrained by geographical boundaries on what schools they attend. Especially when one school is clearly better performing than another. It's a sad state and it should change but kids shouldn't be destined to simply where they grow up.

Racial Profiling: Far Left
Ridiculous and shouldn't happen.

United Nations: Center
Mostly useless but harmless. No reason to withdraw.

War in Iraq: Far Left
This was a mistake from the start and never should have happened. After Vietnam, the second biggest American foreign policy disaster of all time.

Abortion: Center-Right/Right
Affirmative Action: Center-Right/Right
Artwork Funding: Center-Left?
Assault Weapons Ban: Right
Campaign Finance Reform: Center-Left
Capital Punishment: Right
Concealed Carry: Right
D.C. Statehood: Center-Left
Defense Funding: Center?
Environment: Center-Left
Euthanasia: Center-Right/Right
Faith Based Initiatives: Center-Right?
Farm Subsidies: Left

But not for Big Agriculture

Flag Burning Amendment: Center-Left
Gay Adoption: Center-Left
Gay Marriage: Center-Left
Medicare/Medicaid: Center-Left
Minimum Wage: Center-Left

War in Iraq: Left (Center-Right w/o hindsight, probably)

Overall, if all issues are rated equally on a scale of -44 (left) to 44 (right), I got a -2.5 with hindsight and a +0.0 without.

Left/Right counted as -2, +2, respectively, Center-Left/Left or CR/R as -1.5, +1.5, respectively, Center as 0 and CL/CR as -1, +1.
