While nothing will please me more than the Democrats sweeping many Ohio races this November, I feel sorry for Bob Taft. Liberals shouldn't forget that he took the courage to speak out against Ohio's 2004 marriage ban and this is one of the main reason's why he's so unpopular with his own party. He knew the ban would hurt the campaign to attract corporations to Ohio, but his mega-church base was outraged that a Republican they elected wasn't 100% anti-gay. So Bob Taft is okay in my book.

He was right on that issue, however the bad from the MASSIVE CORRUPTION that is Bob taft and the GOP machine in Ohio far outweighs any good in this one instance

So basically he got Gray Davis syndrome where he pissed off his base with some spineless moderatism, and yet the other party didn't like him either?

The Senate race is still competitive, Brown isn't a lock yet.

Um........thanks. I wasn't sure of where that race stood until you told me.

There's a lot more going on in Ohio than just a Senate race jfern...some of us who actually live here care about the other statewide races as well, like the Governor's race, which is far more important than the Senate race.

If anything, he should be be thankful to the Democrats in 2002 for nominating somebody so obtuse and elitist that he made John Kerry look like Dr. Phil.

I'm never happy about something being a failure at doing their job.

However, given that he has failed, I am thankful that the public has been made aware of this fact. Smiley

I don't know anything about the issue, so would you explain to me why it would keep corporations from coming into Ohio?

Taft opposed the amendment on economic grounds, not social or religious ones. IIRC it would have banned civil unions as well as marriage. While I don't claim to be an expert on the economic side of this issue, my understanding is that the law would hurt efforts to attract gay workers from the Northeast and California by certain corporations. They wouldn't want to live in a place where they would be denied civil rights. Ohio's economy has been really bad these past few years and Taft wanted to bring more jobs to the state. Also, as the article states, there were concerns about unmarried straight couples being denied rights.

There are probably other reasons I am missing. This is all I can think of for now.

Thats a dumb rational. If we're only allowed to comment on our own politicians this forum would get pretty slow and boring.

I certainly am not happy for the citizens of Ohio for having to live with such an abject failure as a governor.

I am, however, happy that they will have a chance to clean house this November.
