What's always forgotten with spoilers in elections is that the candidate might've oriented themselves optimally anyway. If Gore had done something to garner those Nader votes perhaps he would've lost votes from the middle and suffered a clear loss. If Clinton had appealed to hardcore Sanders supporters she would've lost more swing votes in the suburbs. Of course this is all hypothetical. I don't anyone thinks that Gore or Clinton ran optimal campaigns, but running for a 3rd term is difficult, and positioning oneself to the center is the best strategy when the country naturally wants change after eight years of the same party.

Short answer: No.
