Complementary to the CLE thread. I remember this case so vividly. At first I thought her husband was a scumbag and Terri was showing signs of consciousness, but when I saw the autopsy photos of her brain I completely changed my mind. Removing the feeding tube was the right thing to do.

Only an unfathomably selfish person would keep their loved one artificially alive in horrible conditions just because they are too cowardly to say goodbye. You would need an electron microscope to locate my respect for Schiavo's parents.

This was nothing more than the pseudo religious right grandstanding.  The plug is pulled on people in hospitals every day.  The reason the pseudo religious right made a big deal out of this is because the Schiavo family had private medical insurance.

If anybody thinks that they would have made anything out of this if Terri Schiavo was being kept alive on the taxpayers' dime, they need to give their head a shake.

No, everyone dies, I had to acknowledge that when my mom died, we are mortals and euthanasia is one way to put people out of they're suffering

When you are terminal, you aren't gonna ever return to your original form anyways, you are gonna stay sick for the rest of your life

If we treat dogs in that position better than people there's something wrong.

They had the same opinion of her that anti abortion advocates have of fetuses but worse given this was an adult kept alive against her will.

Schiavo is a special enough case that this comparison always struck me as crass, no matter which position on which issue it was being used to advance.

What ended up happening is one of the stronger arguments for legal euthanasia that I'm aware of, in the sense that there was a cruelty to removing the feeding tube and letting her starve in a way that there wouldn't have been to just pumping her full of morphine and watching her surf the wave of cortisol into the sunset. I'm not sure how to reconcile this observation with my otherwise very strong opposition to euthanasia, but I'm also not sure I really feel the need to given that I don't really vote based on this issue and would seek the guidance of moralists wiser than myself if I ever ended up making these kinds of decisions about a loved one.

I was using it mainly to criticize “pro lifers”. Of course, assisted suicide is becoming more tolerated as a concept than it was when Kevorkian lost his license 30 years ago after using it on a woman from Portland with Alzheimers.

She should've been allowed to die years earlier. My respect for her parents measures no more than a Planck length.

Everyone dies and it's called Euthenasia I had Euthenasia placed on my Brother in Law and Mom and Euthanasia says to allow the person to die early to put them out of pain

It's not pleasant but it's not for the living it's for the deceased

That's why so many lawsuits involving Nursing Homes allowing Covid victims die were dismissed because everyone will eventually die, and it's called Euthenasia

Brain damage car victims or paralyzed people get Euthenized, it's not new
