Most people when they think of hockey is Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Willie O'Ree (first Black NHL player) and Don Cherry.....

The NHL has maybe the best stars in a generation in PK Subban, Nathan MacKinnon, Tyler Seguin, Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid, but few people outside of the hockey bubble know who they are.....

What can they do to market themselves?

The only reason I know any of those names is because a friend turned me on to a hockey-themed webcomic.  https://www.checkpleasecomic.com/comic/01-01-01

(It's the story of a 5'-6"-tall figure-skater-turned-baking-vlogger from Georgia, who goes to college in Massachusetts on a hockey scholarship.  Hijinks ensue.  It takes place between August 2013 and the summer of 2017.)

They don't do any worse than baseball, which does an atrocious job at marketing personalities. Also, highly team-based sports like hockey and baseball, where one star can't win games on their own and has to sit on the bench for large portions of the game, aren't natural fits for that kind of marketing.

Even the NBA, which I think everyone will agree heavily (and successfully) markets its stars, only manages one player who is truly in the stratosphere in terms of worldwide fame.

It's a Pandemic and there isn't any fighting no more, the old Enforcers are done Stu Grimson, Riley Cote, and Colton Orr,  Breshear, McSorley it's over, they all retired

Colton Orr was my favorite

Stars can't fight due to the Pandemic or don't want to

Charles Barkley is a big NHL fan, he is Black, and he is friends with Wayne Gretzky and others, that could attract Black people, but hockey in America is popular among rich white areas and rich white people in colder Northern and Southern regions (Boston, New York-Long Island, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Detroit)

I am sure a lot of Macomb County whites are Red Wings fans---not really a friendly group towards Black people, the Wayne County-Macomb County rivalry runs deep

They can't, Hockey was good in the 2000s when we had enforcers and fighters, since Pandemic Red Ring Enforcers are DONE AND Many HAD CONCUSSION SYNROME Hitting HEAD ON ICE After FIGHTS LIKE FOOTBALL PLAYERS
