I really don't get why that area found John Kerry appealing but voted for Romney in 2012? It is 85% white now and was whiter back then. It is a fairly blue-collar county, so I don't get why it started voting Democrat, when it had been voting fairly in line with the statewide vote before, and now is a likely-safe R county. Also, now, why is Volusia still fairly competitive when you factor in it's demographics?

Daytona Beach was larger in proportion relative to the county back in the day

Low education levels, WWC trending R and retirees from places like Indiana, Ohio with those backgrounds. I wouldn't call it a terribly socially conservative place though.
