Other. The way the human mind works. We tend to focus on negatives, and the mainstream media only playing negative stories panicked many parents into thinking things were worse than they actually were, and so they became overprotective of their kids. Additionally in our current economy with big business dominating and college being harder than ever to get into, parents feel the need to make sure their kids are perfect, meaning perfect grades, which require your life to revolve around school and studying even in the summer, and zero mistakes, whether academically or behaviorally, even if the kid is more likely to learn from their own mistakes rather than someone else's.
